Statement about Waiwera Valley statue controversy

updated: 4 July 2025

The New Zealand Buddhist Council encourages all Buddhist communities to foster positive and harmonious relationships with neighbouring communities. We were made aware by media of the planned statue and the residents’ concerns in Waiwera Valley.

The Council has no authority or mandate to direct the affairs of its members. Jeta’s Grove Charitable Trust is a member of the Buddhist Council in good standing, and they had no obligation to inform or discuss their construction plans with us, and nor did they. Since we learned of their plans we have been in discussion with them and they have released a public statement to neighbours, media and others.

We attach the public statement of Jeta’s Grove Charitable Trust to give their perspective.
