The New Zealand Buddhist Council expresses deep concern at the protest led by Brian Tamaki and Destiny Church on 21 June 2025 in Auckland. The event included the tearing and stomping on of flags associated with non-Christian religions and migrant communities. Such actions are contrary to the values of mutual respect, cultural understanding, and peaceful coexistence that underpin our society.
Representing Buddhist communities across Aotearoa, we stand firmly against all acts that promote division or demean the sacred symbols of any faith. We call upon public leaders to affirm that freedom of expression must not be misused to incite hatred or marginalise minority groups. True freedom is exercised with responsibility and compassion. We encourage the New Zealand Government to provide clearer guidance on the limits of hate speech, and to promote an inclusive understanding of our national identity – one that honours Aotearoa’s multicultural society and its many spiritual traditions.
We also reaffirm our solidarity with the communities targeted in this protest. Buddhist teaching emphasises the cultivation of goodwill, non-harming, and wise speech. It is through these values that we seek to support a society where all people can live with dignity and feel safe, valued, and included.
